Task Manager is a great tool that helps you manage the way programs, processes and services run. In Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, it has received many improvements, some of which are simply awesome. But, before you go into detail and learn how the new Task Manager works, we would like to share all the ways to launch the tool. There are many more than you would think and some methods will surprise you.
1. Keyboard Shortcut - Ctrl + Shift + Esc
The fastest way to launch the Task Manager is to use the keyboard and press the keys Ctrl + Shift + Escape simultaneously.
2. Keyboard Shortcut - Ctrl + Alt + Del Followed by a Click or Tap
Probably the most well known way of opening the Task Manager is by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del on your keyboard. This takes you to the lock screen, where you will find different shortcuts.
Click or tap on Task Manager.
3. Keyboard Shortcut - Win + X Followed by a Click or Tap
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have a hidden menu with useful shortcuts. This menu also includes a shortcut to the Task Manager.
Press Win + X on your keyboard and then select Task Manager. Another way is to use the mouse or your finger, if you have a device with touch.
In Windows 8, move the pointer to the bottom-left corner of the Desktop. A Start thumbnail is displayed. Right click on it (or press and hold) to open this menu.
In Windows 8.1, right-click or press and hold the Start button, so that the menu is displayed.
4. Search on the Start Screen
While on the Start screen, type the word task and Windows searches for the appropriate apps.
The first result is the Task Manager. Click or tap on it.
In Windows 8.1, the search is done the same. Only the results are displayed differently.
5. Use its Shortcut in All Apps
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have an All Apps view, similar to All Programs in Windows 7’s Start Menu.
To open this list in Windows 8, go to the Start screen and swipe from the bottom or right click somewhere on the empty space available. Then, click or tap All Apps.
Scroll to the Windows System folder.
There you will find the Task Manager shortcut.
In Windows 8.1, opening the All Apps view is simpler. Move your mouse or finger to the bottom-left side of the Start screen. A Down arrow is displayed.
Click or tap on it to open the All Apps view. The Task Manager shortcut is found in the Windows System folder.
6. Run its Executable - Taskmgr.exe
Task Manager can be launched using its executable - Taskmgr.exe.
It can be found in your Windows folder, by going to System32 and scrolling down to the files that begin with the letter t.
You can also run this executable from the Command Prompt or the Run window.
7. Download and Use a Desktop Shortcut
You can create a shortcut to this tool or you can download the shortcut we have created for you and copy it to your Desktop.

8. Right Click the Notification Area on the Taskbar
Go to the Desktop and look at the notification area on the taskbar (bottom-right), where you see the time and date being shown.
Right click or press and hold on that area, to view a contextual menu. This menu includes many options for customizing the taskbar and also a shortcut for launching the Task Manager.
Click or tap on it.
