Ask the Readers: What Startup Manager Do You Use?

Soon, we will start a series of articles about managing start-up programs and items in Windows. Before we do this, we need you to share your approach to managing startup items. Which programs do you use for this task? Do you stick to the System Configuration (msconfig.exe) utility from Windows or do you use third-party programs like Soluto? Do you have any interesting tips to share with others? Don’t be shy and share with us and the other readers.

We would like to thank you for the awesome input. As a result we published a pretty comprehensive analysis: What’s the Best Startup Manager for Windows?.

With TuneUp Utilities, i simply disable non-essential apps or services.
WinPatrol is good to make sure unwanted apps don't make their way in.

Thanks for sharing Daniel. I did not know about TuneUp Utilities.

You're welcome!

TuneUp isn't free but it does the job.

System Explorer!
and "WhatInStartup" from Nirsoft

I use SpyBot S & D.
It so happens I run this program once a week anyway to scan my system. It has a great programs StartUp Tool that offers descriptions for many programs/utilities that run at boot time.
I find it convenient and useful.

I use autoruns by windows sysinternals . I've tried and used virtually every startup manager that exists but now I pretty much stick wit autoruns the to its used of use, completeness and portabiligy. I found evolutionary too slow and intrusive.I can't really read what I am tying do that's it for one

I use Soluto. Works great for me, especially with the new features.

I use Soluto. It's still in Beta but it's free for now.

If you use anything but Autoruns from Sysinternals (Microsoft), you're a noob.

I use msconfig. It's simple and easy to use...

Like many other things, I have found it helpful to use more than one tool:
Sysinternals autoruns
soluto
CCleaner
and others

Soluto and WinPatrol

Currently I am back to using Startup Delayer by Cliff Cawley. I tried Soluto twice and had to uninstall it twice. It simply left far too many things outside of delay that others would control.

I've tried and used virtually every startup manager that exists but now I pretty much stick wit autoruns the to its used of use,

I use IObit Toolbox.
It's pretty straightforward and easy to use.
You don't even need to install it!
And also its FREE!

I've been having good luck & short boot time with Soluto, but I'm going to check out a couple that I hadn't heard of till now.

Thanks a lot for all the input. It's been really eye-opening and it will help a lot in making a great series of articles on the subject.
For now, we published the very first article about the Windows System Configuration (msconfig.exe) tool: How To Use the System Configuration Tool & All its Awesomeness!. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Thanks everyone. As a result of your feedback, we just published this complete analysis: What’s the Best Startup Manager for Windows?.
