Customize the Date, Time and All Related Settings

logo date and timeIn this tutorial I will talk about how to change the date and time settings in Windows 7. I will show you how to customize the format of the date and time, how to have additional clocks for different time zones in your taskbar, how to update the time from an internet time server and how to change time synchronization settings.

Change The Date, Time & Their Format

In order to change the date and time in Windows 7 you have to right-click on the clock from the taskbar. Then, from the right-click menu, select 'Adjust date/time'. Alternatively you can click on the clock from the taskbar and then on 'Change date and time settings'.

Date and Time

A new window will open with three tabs: Date and Time, Additional Clocks and Internet Time.

Date and Time

On the first tab you can change the date, time and the time zone. Also, there is information about the Daylight Saving Time. You can select if you want to be notified or not when the clock changes.

To modify the date and time click on the 'Change date and time' button.

Date and Time

In the new window, set the appropriate time and date. In the calendar you can 'zoom-in and out' if you click on the name of the month. You will see all the months from the current year and, if you continue to click, all the years from this decade and finally all the decades from this century. You can zoom back in by selecting the appropriate decade, year, month and day. Also you can use the small left-right arrows to move from one decade/year/month/day to another.

In the same window there is a link to 'Change calendar settings'. Click on it if you want to change the date or time format.

Date and Time

The Customize Format window will open. Here you have the possibility to change the date format. There are two date formats that you can customize: a Short date and a Long date. The short date appears in the taskbar right under the clock and the long date appears only when you hover or click on the clock from the taskbar.

Date and Time

You can use the drop-down list menu to choose from different date formats or you can directly edit each format.

Date and Time

As an example, let's say that I want to display the short date like this: Wednesday, 01 / Jan. - 09. In order to accomplish this I will have to write in the short date format text box this code: dddd, d / MMM - yyyy. As you can see you can add punctuation marks like '. , / -' and spaces, between the default day, month or year code. One limitation that I noticed is that you cannot insert MMMM (which is the full name of a month) in the short date format. Apparently this code works only in the long date format.

Date and Time

This is how this code will look like in the taskbar clock.

Date and Time

Then you can choose an interval of years so that when a two-digit year is entered, it will be interpreted correctly.

Date and Time

You can also choose the first day of the week which may vary depending on your country.

Date and Time

NOTE: If you are not satisfied with the settings you've made, use the Reset button. This restores the system defaults settings for numbers, currency, time and date.

On the same Customize Format window, one tab to the left, there is the Time tab. Here you can edit the time format, the same way it was described for the date format. We have the Short time and Long time which are the same as the short and long date: the short time can be found in the taskbar and the long time can be found only if you click on the clock from the taskbar.

Date and Time

Here you can also rename the AM and PM symbols. For example, you can replace them with Day and Night or Morning and Evening.

Date and Time

When you are done editing, click on the OK button and then again on the OK button from the Region and Language window and finally one more time on OK at the Time and Date Settings window.

Date and Time

How To Change The Time Zone

To change the Time Zone you have to open the Date and Time window again. Right-click on the clock from the taskbar and select Adjust time/date from the right-click menu. Alternatively, search for 'change time zone' in the Start Menu search box and click on the first result. The Date and Time window will open.

Date and Time

Now click on 'Change time zone'.

Date and Time

In the new window, click on the drop-down list and select the appropriate time zone. Then click on OK and if you don't have anything else to modify, click again on OK.

Depending on your time zone the Automatically adjust clock for Daylight Saving Time option will be available or not. If you want Daylight Saving Time to be enabled leave the small check box in front of the option selected, if not, deselect it.

Date and Time

Add Clocks For Multiple Time Zones

To add additional clocks for different time zones, you have to open the Date and Time window. You can also write in the search box of the Start Menu the words 'add clock' and then click on the first result. The Date and Time window will open.

Date and Time

In the Date and Time window, go to the Additional Clocks tab. Then mark the small check box in front of each Show this clock option and configure them.

From the drop-down menu you can select the appropriate time zone and then you can write a display name for each clock. When finished click on OK.

Date and Time

For example, I added one clock for (UTC-08:00) Pacific Time which I named North America and another clock for (UTC+01) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, etc. with the name West Europe.

In order to see the additional clocks, move your mouse over the clock shown in the taskbar or click on it.

Date and Time

Change Internet Synchronization Settings

If you want to change the server Windows 7 uses to update the time automatically on your PC, open the Date and Time window and select the Internet Time tab.

Here you can see which is the current synchronization website, when the next synchronization is scheduled, when was the last synchronization done and if it was successful or not. To change the settings, click on the 'Change settings'.

Date and Time

You can select if you want the time to be synchronized with an Internet time server or not, simply by selecting or deselecting the small check box in front of the 'Synchronize with an Internet time server' option.

Then, from the drop-down list you can select a different time server. If you prefer a time server which is not present in the drop-down list, you can copy and paste its web address in the server text field.

Date and Time

If you want to manually update the time on your computer and synchronize it with specialized time servers on the internet, click on the Update now button, then click on OK and again on OK in the Date and Time window.

Conclusion

Customizing the date & time settings does involve quite a lot of windows and steps but it is not that complicated. Most of the menus and options are self-explanatory. Tips such as adding two additional clocks for different time zones can be very useful if you are working with people from different countries. With one click you get to see the hour in their country and schedule meetings at a time which is suitable for everybody.

Why does the calendar not have number of week showing ? I really hope they put that in when WIndows 7 is released.

In the final version, the calendar looks the same.

what if i don't want to see the date... can i get rid of it so i just have the time showing?

go to taskbar properties and choose "use small icons" this will make it go away

hello
is it possible to show time and date together in one line, while using small taskbar icons.....
i know it will take more space...

i am just curious!..it will be great it that could work

Unfortunately not. Even if you use small icons for the Start Menu and taskbar - it doesn't work. It will just show the hour, without the date.

I managed to show time and date together, with small icons.
It involves manipulating fonts using regedit, and Microsoft probably didn't intend it to happen, but hey, I got it working.

Care to share your findings? I'm curious still.

I am glad you asked. Please read all 4 pages here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/disab...

It outlines how to completely rid your Windows 7 installation of the hideous 'ClearType' font smoothing that Microsoft thinks is so much better than what Windows XP had.

I can't remember exactly which of the posts amongst those 4 pages was the best one - more likely it is towards the end.

Basically, you need to disable ClearType for your taskbar. I think the taskbar is 1000 times better without ClearType, because the fonts are all crisp, and you have the added bonus of being able to see the time and date at the same time!

Hi everyone,

Can somoene help me out with an issue I'm having with the time zones.

For some reason, i cannot select a time zone, every time I click "select time zone" a blank list rolls out, and there's nothing to clikc, it's just empty. It seems my time zones were erased or something!

I'll appreciate any help, because I want to set multiple clocks for different countries.

Are you trying to do this on your own personal computer or on a company owned computer, managed/serviced by the company's IT department?

Also, are you logged in with an account which is set as administrator?

Hi,

I'm trying to do this on my personal computer, and my account is set to administrator.

It says : "Your current time zone is not recognized. Please select a valid time zone." I'm in Paris, and my clock dispays the right time, so it's weird.

Thanks for looking into it!

Very nice work, can you please tell me how to change time and date in Win7, so I can only see the time, and not the date? I can't seem to be able to do that. Thank you in advance.

I have windows 7 machine, where I have changed the date and time setting as per IST format. System is writing the logs with proper system dates. But the problem is inside the log system is picking up the date and time +5.30. can anybody help me to resolve the issue ?

To which logs are you referring to? System logs written by Windows 7. Logs made by another application? Please provide more info.

Calendar always skips a month.
When I scroll my calendar forward or back, it always jumps a month. I have checked all my settings but cannot understand this. Any ideas?

hi for some reason every time i turn on my desktop the incorrect date & time is incorrect ,so i have to reset it...anybody who encountered the same issue...?thanks

Is it your own personal desktop or a corporate one?

Hi,

I am running the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and as far as I understand there should be a GPO snapin module to the MMC available to manage the Windows Time settings.

My computer's clock will delay the clock several seconds per 24h period and the default setting of the SpecialPollInterval is 604800 seconds (7 days or once a week). I can adjust the poll interval in the NTPClient registry section to a more suitable value to compensate for the skewing machine clock, but where can I find the Windows Time snapin for MMC?

Grateful for tips!

Axel

Ciprian,

Thank you very much for advising me! I tried to subscribe via my Facebook account, le's see how it works!

everytime I turn off my computer, the clock stops too. what should I do?

I am not sure what you mean by "everytime I turn off my computer, the clock stops too". If you turn off the computer, it is normal that everything shuts down and stops functioning. Can't you see the time when you start the computer again?

i mean, if i turn my computer off at 9am, and after 3 hours and i open it again, my clock still says 9am.. not 11am..

Then, most probably the Windows Time service is not starting automatically at boot. Search for Service in the Start Menu search box, click on Service and edit the properties of the Windows Time service so that it is set to start automatically.

Ok, I had a similar problem, that the Windows Time is not started properly. It started and then it stopped with a failure setting time. I use Internet time and it takes some time to start my network adapter, it uses DHCP to get an IP address and the network interface is not immediately available to use.

However, my Windows Time setting is that Internet time source should be used and when the Windows Time fails to get time from any source including peers and other possibilities such as a domain controller (I don't have any domain controller) it fails and the Windows Time service stops due to failure.

Of course, the Windows Time should depend on a successful network interface startup.

I used another solution, I changed the startup type for the Windows Time service from Automatic to Delayed Automatic. It implies that the Windows Time Service will not be started until all services defined.

This delays the Windows Time service sufficiently tr prevent it to start prior to the network is ready.

And the problem when Windows Time service fails to start is eliminated.
