How to Create & Add Custom Ringtones in Windows Phone 8

If you are like me, you always want to use another set of ringtones than those bundled with your phone. Luckily, in Windows Phone 8, this is not a hard thing to do, even though you do need to follow a specific procedure and meet a few requirements. I will share everything you need to know in this tutorial, so don’t hesitate to read it.

Step 1. Use a Good Ringtone Maker Software

To be sure that your custom ringtones will work on Windows Phone you should create them with special programs like Ringtone Maker. This free application will create ringtones that meet the specific requirements of Windows Phone regarding file size and length. You cannot use as ringtones files that are protected with digital rights management (DRM) or files that are larger than 30MB. The only formats accepted for ringtones are .mp3 and .wma.

We recently published a complete step by step tutorial, showing how to use Ringtone Maker to create custom ringtones. You can find it here: Create Free Custom Ringtones for Any Smartphone with Ringtone Maker.

I also tried to use entire songs saved as mp3 files, without converting them with Ringtone Maker. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they did not. When I could use them as ringtones, the phone played only the first 30 seconds. If you tried this too, don’t hesitate to share your experience on whether it works or not.

Now, that you have the files you want to use as custom ringtones, it is time to copy them to your phone.

Step 2. Copy the files to the Ringtones Folder on your Windows Phone

All the custom ringtones are stored in a special folder namedRingtones. This is where you have to copy your own ringtones. Let’s see how this is done:

Connect your Windows Phone to your computer. If this is the first time you connect it, it will take a few seconds for Windows to install the appropriate drivers. Then, open File Explorer (if you are using Windows 8) or Windows Explorer (if you are using Windows 7).

In File Explorer (or Windows Explorer), click on Computer. In the Portable devices section, look for your Windows Phone.

Double click or tap on it. Depending on your specific model you will see a partition or two. Models which allow you to insert an SD card (e.g. HTC 8S) will display two partitions: Phone and SD card. Models which do not allow you to insert an SD card (e.g. Nokia Lumia 920, HTC 8X) will display only the Phone partition.

The Phone partition is your smartphone’s internal flash memory.

The ringtones included with Windows Phone are not displayed here or anywhere else. Therefore you can not delete them to save space, in case you wanted to.

Step 3. Set the Custom Ringtone in Windows Phone

On your phone, go to Settings and then to ringtones+sounds. Tap the current ringtone, in order to display all the available ringtones.

You will find the ones you just added in the Custom section, at the top of the list.
