How to Install, Remove and Hide Fonts in Windows 7

When in a quest for an interesting document or presentation, the solution can sometimes be a new font. Although Windows 7 comes with a wide range of fonts, you can find many websites that offer fonts, either free or for purchase. After you download a font you will have to install it and, when you don't need it any more, you will want to remove it or just hide it. Therefore, in this article, I will show how to install, remove and hide a font.

How to Install Fonts

NOTE: In order to install a font, you must have Administrator rights. After you have downloaded a font, if it's in an archive format, make sure to extract it first.

There are two ways to install a font. The first option is to double-click the font to open it and then press the Install button.

Install Fonts

The second option is to right-click the font and select Install.

Install Fonts

If you now open any text editor you should be able to choose the font that you have just installed from the list of available fonts.

How to Remove or Hide Fonts

To uninstall a font, go to Control Panel and click on 'Appearance and Personalization'.

Install Fonts

From the 'Appearance and Personalization' window choose Fonts. This is the panel from which you can organize, preview, delete and hide your fonts.

Install Fonts

To get to the Fonts window, you can also search for font in the search box from the start menu and click on the Fonts search result.

To uninstall a font, select it and then press the Delete button.

Install Fonts

You can also choose not to remove a font, but hide it instead. To do that, select the desired font and click the Hide button.

Install Fonts

If you want to show a font that you previously hid, click the font and then the Show button.

Install Fonts

By default, Windows 7 will hide fonts that are not designed for your input language settings. For example, if your default language is English, then Arabic, Chinese or Japanese fonts, which are not designed for English language settings, will therefore not be displayed. To change this option, so that these fonts are not hidden anymore, from the Fonts window, click Font Settings.

Install Fonts

From the Font Settings panel, deselect the box with 'Hide font based on language settings' and press the OK button.

Hide Fonts is far from perfect. Not all applications work with the feature. See http://www.loseyourmind.com/Why-hide-fonts-does-not-work-with-windows-7.....

Great post, unfortunately it doesn't work. At least not across the board. You noticed the "These settings might not apply to all of your programs" parenthetical note?

Do you hate the "Office Ribbon" and choose to stick with Office 2003? Then you're stuck with "World-Wide Fonts" whether you want them or not.

Use Firefox? You'll have to wade past Aharoni Bold and BatangChe on your way to choosing Corbel as your standard font, because You Can't Delete Them and Windows 7 only hides them from some applications.

My bad for not buying all new Microsoft products? If that were my style, I'd own a Mac.

I'm not a happy camper about this, but not so unhappy that I'll use the ribbon - or IE!

Get over it!

"These settings might not apply to all of your programs":
If the program is smart enough to inform Windows that it is running as a specific locale, then the icons are shown accordingly.

The functionality is provided by Windows, but the program used needs to be "compatible". Windows can't just decide that the program you are using should only display Japanese fonts if the program does not tell it to do so. If it did, there would be more problems with this function as it would assume incorrectly most of the time.

Quit the fanboy drama queen posts :)

What am I stuipd? The tutorial says " go to Control Panel and click on 'Appearance and Personalization'
When I click on Control Panel I get a lomg list of ways to "adjust your computers settings." No mention of Appearance and Personalization."
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

I think you are using the Classic view for Control Panel. Here is a tutorial on how to switch views: The Control Panel - Switching Between the Classic & Category View.
