Have you installed add-ons for Internet Explorer 9 which you no longer need? Or do you simply need to use them on rare occasions? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then read this tutorial. You will learn how to disable add-ons (which can be enabled back later) or remove unwanted add-ons.
Disabling Add-ons (and Later Enabling them)
All add-on management operations are done in the Manage Add-ons window. To open it, click on the Tools button (wheel shaped) on the top-right side of the Internet Explorer 9 window. Then, click on Manage add-ons.
The Manage Add-ons window now opens. Go to the appropriate type of add-ons and find the one you want to disable. Right click on it and select Disable.
You’re informed if any related add-ons will be disabled together with it. To confirm the operation, click the Disable button.
The add-on you selected is now disabled.
NOTE: to enable a disabled add-on, you simply need to follow exactly the same procedure and, instead of Disable, click on Enable everywhere.
If you want to remove add-ons, the steps you must take are a bit more complex, due to the weird implementation some types of add-ons get. For example, many toolbars and extensions are distributed with separate installation files (setup.exe or setup.msi) which need to be downloaded and installed. The whole installation process is done outside Internet Explorer 9, not inside it, like it is the case with search providers and accelerators. Therefore, uninstalling such add-ons is also done outside Internet Explorer 9. Most toolbars and extensions for Internet Explorer 9, are found in the Programs and Features (found in Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features) list of applications. You need to uninstall them from there, like it is the case with Cooliris for Internet Explorer, for example.
NOTE: When you select an add-on and you find only the Disable option in the right-click menu, it means it cannot be removed from Internet Explorer 9. You should try to uninstall it from Programs and Features.
Search providers are very easy to uninstall. In the Manage Add-ons window, click on Search Providers, select the add-on you want to uninstall, right click on it and select Remove.
The add-on is removed in milliseconds.
The same goes for Accelerators.
I hope this tutorial clarified why some add-ons can only be disabled from the Manage Add-ons window and how to actually get rid of them. For more useful tips and tutorials on Internet Explorer 9, check out the list recommended below.
