Study on the Anatomy of a Home Network

If there’s one thing we learned while working on the series of articles on networking and our first book, is that home networks are more complex than ever. In order to understand more about the “typical” home network and how hard it is to create and manage, we need your feedback. Therefore please take 5 minutes of your time and tell us: How Complex IS Your Home Network? What do you get in return? Well... for starters prizes worth a total of $450 to choose from.

Reminder: Very few days left until March 31st. If you haven't yet helped us with this study, don't hesitate to do it now. There are also some great prizes up for grabs, to show our appreciation to those that contribute.

UPDATE: The study is now closed. The winners are announced here: The Winners of our Study on the Anatomy of a Home Network.

The Anatomy of a Home Network - Results

Once we extract all the winners, we will also publish the results of the study, so that everybody has a better understanding of home networking. We plan to use the insights gained through this study as a source of inspiration for future articles which help all our readers. We will also do other interesting things like a O’Reilly Webcast, where we want to take the discussion to a whole new level and share even more insights with the world.

This is a poorly planned survey. The question, "What other devices interact with at least one of the computers in your home" is not clear if the connection is directly to the computer or through the router. One might assume, since the survey is about networks, the connection would be through the network but that assumption may not occur to everyone, skewing the results of the survey.

The question, "What kind of security solutions you are using to protect the computers on your network?" ignores that there are many security solutions in addition to antivirus programs and firewalls. At the very least, there should be a category for "other." Many people use anti-malware programs, frequently more than one at a time, in addition to AV programs and firewalls (ani-malware programs and AV programs are not the same).

Thanks for sharing this with us. Hopefully now the survey is slightly better. :D

in terms of network and computer devices, you could add a category for digital still and video cameras - firewire, and usb.

Also, what about wireless devices and ethernet over powerline? I use both.

Thanks a lot. Updated once more. :D

AS OF TODAY 1:25 PM PST I GUESS THE SURVEY STILL HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED BECAUSE I JUST NOW COMPLETED THE SURVEY BUT I DID NOT SEE ANYTHING REGARDING ANTI-MALWARE/ANTI-SPYWARE IN YOUR 4TH QUESTION ?
ARE YOU USING THE "OTHER" BOX OPTION TO INCLUDE THIS?

I ASK BECAUSE THESE TYPE OF PROGRAMS ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND ARE A VERY NECESSARY SECURITY MEASURE TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER !

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU INCLUDE A SEPARATE LINE ITEM FOR ANTI-MALWARE AND ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAMS.
