A picture is worth a thousand words they say. But a good image is more than that, it creates a different world in which you get lost, with characters for whom you fall in love. This is the feeling that you get from viewing Andreea Retinschi’s photos. In today’s article I invite you to get to know a young, talented (and beautiful) photographer, and get the chance to see a glimpse of her work.
Introducing Andreea Retinschi
Focused mostly on portraits, fashion and glamour, Andreea Retinschi’s photography leaves you a bit breathless when you view it. The importance of every detail, the clarity and sharpness of her photos are elements that contribute to making Andreea’s pictures unique.
She graduated the Photography and Communication class at a University from Toronto and considers that what you learn by yourself, through experience, is more important, especially when it comes to photography.
We are curios to know how & when your passion for photography started?
I fell in love with photography during high-school. I took a class for black and white film photography, and I enjoyed it so much that I took the follow up the next year. The deciding moment was one day when I was alone in the darkroom, developing my photographs. I realized that everything, from putting the film inside the camera, to taking the actual photographs and developing the film was done by me. It was my creation from head to toe and I loved and held on to that feeling. When later that second year of photography, somebody asked me what I'd like to do if I never needed money, I knew it would have to be photography.
How would you describe your photographic style?
Colours and contrast. Fairy tales and dreams. Songs and silence.
In your view, what makes a portrait stand out?
A special mix between an expressive model and a moment sprinkled with a good composition and lighting. Props help, too :)
How do you find locations for your photos? Is there a certain time of day you know will help you make better pictures?
I keep my eyes open when walking around town, especially when I’m in a car, going somewhere, and I note down the interesting locations I see.
If I am able to choose, I’ll always take that hour right before sunset. I’m not a big mornings fan. The beautiful diffuse lighting of sunsets does the job for me.
What excites you about photography and what subjects you enjoy most?
I love that moment when I can feel I just took “the one”. That photograph which is the soul of the whole photoshoot. I sometimes even do a little dance or jump around. It's quite silly.
Right now I love delicate models with pre-Raphaelite features, oval faces and big deer eyes, but I pretty much photograph anyone who has that je ne sais quois, no matter of height or weight, or facial features.
Is there such a thing as “the perfect shot”?
If you see me dancing in a random public place and I'm holding a camera, I just took it. There definitely is such a thing, but it’s not universal. Photography is not mathematical, so there is no final answer, there is always space for interpretation. What's perfect for me will not be for others, and vice-versa. You just have to think of any photography contest, it’s impossible to agree on the exact order of the winners that the jury chooses.
How much time do you spend post-processing pictures vs. taking them?
It’s very relative. I sometimes do 15 minutes photoshots because I know I only want one final photograph, and other times I shoot for hours if there are different outfits and locations involved. Time in post-processing is divided the same, sometimes I only need 15 minutes, sometimes I need 15 hours because I just cannot decide what’s missing, sometimes it’s just finding that little notch to the left in contrast or the right chromatic.
What photographic gear and applications do you use?
Canon 5D with: 50 mm : F 1.4, 24-105 mm : F 4, 85 mm : F 1.8, Lens baby 50 mm Composer, Canon Speedlite 580 EXII flash and, of course, Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Are you a Mac or a PC?
Mac, forever. :)
What do you appreciate more about the MAC, compared to the PC?
Its user friendliness and design.
