Mihai Despan is a 28 year old photographer. The first feelings I got while browsing through his work were coziness, peace and honesty. His photos simply merge all the beauty of natural settings and people with the art of knowing exactly when to capture them both. That’s why I was very excited when he agreed to be part of our series of interviews and Windows themes. To learn more about him and get the chance to enjoy his work, don’t hesitate to read this article.
Introducing Mihai Despan
Mihai Despan attended the Academy of Economic Sciences, where he studied European Relations. He discovered his passion for photography when he was a young boy, while watching his father taking photos with an old Zenith camera. Let’s see what he had to share about himself in this short interview:
What's your work experience so far?
I took up a photography class that lasted for three months, and it was there where I learnt to “see” the photos from a technical point of view. Then, I was involved in a few projects in which I had to photograph a few concerts, go up the mountains and capture landscapes, do fashion photography and, later on, portraits. Things simply added up.
Why digital photography? When did all this begin?
I was fascinated by the photos my dad took with his Zenith camera since I was a child. I think that digital photography is excellent for beginners. It gives you the possibility to see how your photos look like, on the spot, and correct your mistakes or maybe change the perspective if it isn’t satisfying enough. It also gives you the possibility to post process the image and change the imperfections or add some more color or maybe a different element to emphasize what you wish to communicate. Still, I never gave up photos taken on film.
What's your favorite type of photography?
I would say…portraits. They seem very personal and they carry a huge load of emotional pressure. As we speak, I am working on a project that deals with black and white portraits on film.
What tools and software do you use for post production and why?
I use a Samsung GX-20 digital camera and a Pentax ZX50 film camera. The lenses I use are of several types but I always choose the same mount so I can use them efficiently. My oldest lens is older than I am: 1983. I use Adobe Lightroom for post processing, but I only make very small corrections. Post processing should not be a way to save a bad photo, but a way to increase the quality of an already great one.
What do you recommend for beginners (cameras/software) and why?
I would recommend, obviously, what I use – Pentax or Samsung. Either way, something with a K mount because it allows you to find many cheap and good quality lenses for your camera.
How much time do you spend taking photos every week?
I can’t really tell. Depends on the project I am working on. There are projects that require me to film 4-5- hours a day. Also, when there is nothing to work for, there are days in a row when I don’t even touch the camera. But that is rare.
What artists do you follow? Who impresses you and why?
There are a lot of good artists out there. One of my favorite communities about photography is 1x.com.
What is your next step? What do you wish to pursue further in your career?
I wish I could define my own style much better than I did so far. I want BurbanART - the public profile I created for displaying my work - to be unique. I want to develop a style that explains exactly what I feel when capturing an image through my lenses.
Enjoy Mihai’s Work Through a Windows Theme - Download Links
Mihai shared with us some of his works, featuring mountain views from Romania and we packed them into two Windows themes: one for Windows 7 and one for Windows 8. The theme is the same in both operating systems.
We recommend that you use your favorite BitTorrent client to download the themes. Download options:
- You can find the BitTorrent download page here: Theme for Windows 7 and Windows 8 featuring works by BurbanART. You can download the torrent file directly from here.
- You can also download the theme using your web browser. However, the download speed might be much slower than via the torrent service we generally use. The Windows 7 theme can be downloaded from here. The Windows 8 theme can be downloaded from here.
If you are not familiar with torrents, we recommend that you read this brief tutorial: Using BitTorrent to Share Big Files with You - How Will it Work?.
