Wake the Computer to Run a Microsoft Security Essentials Scan

In a recent review of Microsoft Security Essentials it was discovered that an option to wake the computer to perform a scheduled scan did not exist. There is a way to force the computer to wake up and complete a scan but it involves editing the scheduled task within Windows 7. This tutorial will take you through the steps required to get this done.

If you need an introduction to the Task Scheduler please review our First steps in Working with the Task Scheduler.

The Microsoft Security Essentials Scheduler

Microsoft Security Essentials provides a nice interface for editing a scan schedule. You will find it by selecting 'Change my scan schedule' at the bottom of the Home tab.

Microsoft Security Essentials

From this interface you can set which day and time a scan should be performed. The default for Microsoft Security Essentials is 2 AM. This seems like a fine time to perform a scan since the computer is likely not being used. It's also likely that your power settings have placed the computer into a mode of sleep or hibernation. If the latter is true, the scheduled scan will not run.

In order to force your computer to wake and perform the scan the steps below should be followed.

Editing the Scheduled Task

Open the Task Scheduler as shown in our First steps in Working with the Task Scheduler. Within the Task Scheduler expand the Task Scheduler Library and then expand Microsoft. Below the Microsoft folder you should see another folder called Microsoft Antimalware. Select it.

Task Scheduler

In the right pane you should see the task for your scheduled scan: 'MP Scheduled Scan'. Next you need to access the task properties. To accomplish this, you may right click on the task and choose Properties or select the Properties link from the Actions menu.

Task Scheduler

Within the task properties select the Conditions tab. Enable the option to 'Wake the computer to run this task' by selecting the checkbox.

Task Scheduler

The setting will now be applied. Unfortunately, any time you change the scheduled scan setting via the Microsoft Security Essentials interface, you will need to update the task again if you continue to desire the 'Wake to Run' functionality.

Conclusion

As you can see, it's not very difficult to wake your computer to perform a scan. I'm hoping the next release of Microsoft Security Essentials will include this option within the program interface. By the time they release this new version, if you have any questions about this fix, please leave a comment.

I sure would like to try that. Especially to run a Full scan. There's no sense waking up the comp. for a quick scan that takes such a short amount of time ( about 3 minutes for me and I just minimize it and keep on doing whatever I may be doing.)
BUT, immediately upon waking my comp. from Sleep it blue screens. I can't seem to find a solution for it.
This is an excellent article for those that can actually use it. Keep 'em coming!

Ugh, troubleshooting a blue-screen when waking from sleep mode can be an absolute bear, as I am sure you have discovered.

The issue may be hardware or software related. I'd recommend making sure you have updated drivers for your system, and any peripherals. If the problem continues after updating the drivers you might want to try disconnecting any peripherals such as a printer or scanner and see if the issue goes away. I imagine you have tried much of this.

There is no shortage of forum posts detailing struggles with this issue. The one linked below offers several points worth troubleshooting and the fix that worked for the poster. I hope this helps.

Thank you, Chuck. I'll check your suggestions out immediately!

No tasks are shown when i select Microsoft Antimalware in the Task Scheduler pane.

I have MSE set for daily scans

I saw similar behavior on a Vista machine until I forced an update of MSE. After the forced update the task appeared as expected.

I've also recently discovered where some folks did not have the task listed and it was because the option “Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use” was unchecked in the MSE scheduled scan setting.

I hope one of these solutions works for you.

Thanks for that, the “Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use” being unchecked seemed to be the problem, can't see why this would be but there you go. I checked the box and it now shows up in task manager.

Once again thanks for the speedy response.

Aah, that's why it wasn't showing up in my task scheduler. Thanks for that!

Question to Irm537 & Ross

OK, so you did not have the task listed and it was because the option “Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use” was unchecked in the MSE scheduled scan setting.

But, how or where did you find it to go back and check it so it can show in the task scheduler?

I am not familiar with the Win 7 but I tried lots of ways to no avail.

Once I went to a restore point before I set it up in the Task Scheduler so I could see the "MP Scheduled Scan" and it worked so I set it up again but lost it later.

Please explain.

Thanks for the tip. But I found a gotcha... when my laptop received an ms update today, the task information changed and the option to start the laptop was unchecked. After rebooting again, the information then stayed.... best to check this option weekly to see if ms updates do affect system scheduled tasks...

lrm537 and Ross and Leo !

I have read your comments over and over. All of you have experienced the same thing as I which is that after setting up the task scheduler, the properties of the task disappeared at some time or other.
Yet, after you CHECKED THE BOX “Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use”, you got the properties back.
Now, please tell me how/where did you find that box to check it again if the task information is not there when you select Microsoft Antimalware and see no task in the Task Scheduler pane.
I have tried to ask the same question before in different ways, but this must be a common knowledge for you guys which I can not figure out.
Please tell me about the steps you take to see that box again to check it

NOTE - This tip does not work.

The system scheduled task did not wake up my laptop in sleep mode. Maybe because the task is owned by the system and not by the user (don't know).

WORKAROUND - I have a task to launch Notepad 30 minutes before the scheduled anti-virus check. This task will wake up my laptop from sleep mode. This way my laptop is on and the scan will happen.

Leo

Thank you for taking time to respond.
Alas, you are telling me about something new, whereas all I want to know is :

how/where did you find that box to check it again if the task information is not there when you select Microsoft Antimalware and see no task in the Task Scheduler pane.

I am at a loss to understand how I could make my question better describe.
lrm537 and Ross and Chuck have all experienced this problem and checked this box again without saying how they found the box to check it since it waws not on the Tas Pane.

It's in the scan schedule settings of mse...

Thanks for this.

I agree with you, should be a feature included with the MSE interface. Aren't most computers hibernating at 2:00 am Sunday (the default schedule)?

Thanks again.
