You might have noticed that, starting in June, I've written a very small number of articles on 7 Tutorials: mostly blog posts, details about our competitions and celebrations. The reason I've done this is that I am working on two things: writing a networking book for Windows 7 users and writing about project management (my daily "job"). In this post I want to give you details about our book and get your feedback. Therefore, do us a big favor by reading this post and leaving your comments. Your feedback is highly appreciated.
The book's title will most probably be "Home Networking for Windows 7 Users". We want to create a book which helps normal people, with no spectacular computing and networking skills, have a pleasant networking experience at home. The book will cover networking between computers with Windows 7 installed. It will also consider network interoperability aspects with other operating systems such as: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Ubuntu Linux, Mac OS X.
We will cover also topics such as media streaming over your home network or the internet, sharing devices such as network printers or transferring files between your computer and mobile devices.
You can find the current chapter structure attached at the bottom of this article.
We want to achieve many things with this book. Some of our objectives include:
The list of objectives is long enough. I'm not sure we will manage to pull off everything we want to achieve with this book, but we will surely try.
We've asked this before, in a survey which did not share any details. Now that we've shared more about what we want to do, please tell us what you think. Would you buy a book from us?
What format would you prefer - eBook, classic paper book, both? How much would you pay for it?
We really want your feedback, so don't hesitate to comment. You are our audience and your opinions are very important, especially on this topic.
First... we need to finish the book. We've written a good portion of it but there's plenty of work left. Once done, we will start looking for a publisher. At the same time we will start a series of proof-reading activities, so that the book has a smaller number of mistakes and it is as coherent and useful as possible. If you want to help, let us know. We need all the help we can get.

First off I want to say I am
First off I want to say I am a huge fan and I read all the tutorials.
Now onto about the book, the whole reason why I decided to subscribe to the tutorials was because they are FREE. Yes they are useful but if I was interested in getting a book that I had to pay for I would have done so to begin with.
I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything but if you came out with a book and stopped with the tutorials or have to starting paying for them. I would unsubscribe because I wouldn't and will not buy a book or pay for the tutorials.
I get emails from Microsoft and they are always offering free books it is limited to a number of people but it is FREE!
Thanks for the feedback
Thanks for the feedback David.
We will never stop writing tutorials and offering them for free. The book is just another way of spreading the word about the site, trying to help people and also earn some money. Nothing else. It will not impact what we do on the site in any way.

Ciprian I am confussed then other than to make money to get people to learn about the website wouldn't it be easier to do advertising on websites such as google or even better Sympatico MSN?
If you can explain what would be different that would be in the book vs the online tuturials. Like a lot of people are explaining Amazon offers the ability to buy things for cheap but not everyone has the luxury of having a credit card to have the ability to buy these things online. And going to book stores here in Canada as an example Indigo and Chapters the books are always around $30-$40 but they offer the same books at walmart for between $20-$30.
I also factor in Hard Cover or Soft Cover, and of course the material in the book. So again personally for me even if an ebook is offered unless i have an oppurtunity to view the material inside only then would i buy it, but again as i mentioned above if the material is not the same as the online tuturials given all my deciding factors i would consider it. But i mean if you already covered the information in the tuturials i dont see why i would pay for something when i could get it for free.
A book can reach a different
A book can reach a different audience and can help spread the word if it is well written. We've tried a bit of Google AdWords but don't think it's a great method.
Regarding the book - there will be some additional content which you will not find on the site but most of it is based on what we've written so far. It's just that the book takes you step by step in a more organized/chronological manner.
We are very aware that some people will choose not to buy it, that's OK. What you are saying makes sense.
However, we hope there will be also a group of readers who will buy it anyway, as a token of appreciation, or who will buy it for friends/family members who might not be that "google friendly" but would appreciate the book as a helpful aid. In the end, this is an experiment for us and we want to see how successful it will be.
Hard Cover/Soft Cover - that's a good question we will have to cover with the publisher, once we find one.
If possible and of course
If possible and of course just of a suggestion, books like Windows 7 for dummies covers the absoultle basics of Windows 7. So far you tutorials have been bang on doing different things. Some have been just basic which is still good but people suchas myself look to get the more in depth type of things, work towards including both.
As a supporter I have spoken to my colleagues as well as my older brother who are all avid readers of your tutorials have all given their support to buying an book or an ebook. But have specified as long as the price stays around $20.
as a preference try for the hardcover ;-) they are harder to damage the spine and covers.
Wow! Thanks David. And yes...
Wow! Thanks David. And yes... asking for more than 20$ seems a bit much for me too.
It depends on the price.
It depends on the price. Amazon, for instance is hard to beat for similar items.

What would be a price you would be willing to pay for such a book?

Similar books are around the $20 price. For instance see the listings under "books, computers, Win 7" at Amazon.com, if you have not already done so. I know that you would not jump into this without doing a little research.

I'd buy it if it was $20 or less. See url below for my list of similar books:

I have not reviewed any of them, but it is a starting point.

Good point indeed. Thanks a lot!
What about an eBook version? If we don't find a publisher, we will start by providing eBook versions first.

I forgot to think about that one.
Yes, for sure.
Keep us updated.

Had to say that.

Good one! :) Actually laughed.
Hope our Indian readers don't mind the joke. Considering that so much is outsourced today...
Yes, I would buy a softcover
Yes, I would buy a softcover book for under $20.00. An ebook, maybe $12.00, but I would prefer soft. I think there is a need for step-by-step instructions all in one place. Even though I read all the 7 Tutorials, searching through all of them takes time and can be confusing when you have to go back and forth looking for previous and supporting material.
Why ain't I "verified"? I
Why ain't I "verified"?
I always hated not being "verified".
Now I have to go and seek counseling, again.
Damn!!
The "not verified" tag is
The "not verified" tag is placed for all comments made by people who do not have a user defined on the site. And since we allow the creation of users only for our editors - you will always be 'not verified'.
You don't need counseling, unless you learn that you cannot live with this tag. :)
Well, OK. I will live my life
Well, OK. I will live my life not verified, I guess.
Lets work on the book.
I still think an e-book will work, with a paperback for those that want it. Maybe toss out a chapter or two by means of an e-book sample to get people interested. Cost will still be a deciding factor. I am leaning towards actually buying a soft cover version. As mentioned before, e-books are fine, but it is a little cumbersome to navigate an e-book as compared to a physical copy. Amazon Kindle for PC allows you to add sticky notes sort of like jump lists as you go along. They are on a side bar type of thing. Most Kindle books are $9.99 or there abouts.
In general, I think the whole concept of a book will work if offered in both formats.
Keep moving.
Yeah... need to work on the
Yeah... need to work on the book first. Just managed to finish another chapter. If everything goes well, by the end of the month we should have the first draft ready.
